Comments – Be It Resolved That…
I think I have a solution to the bot comment situation.
.
There’s a few problems to deal with. First, spam bots have learned simple math and have been polluting the blog with comments.
.
At what rate? It’s currently running around ten to twelve a day. See for yourself:
.
A dozen a day is no big deal whether it’s donuts or spam comments. The second problem is that some of the donuts spam comments are, for want of a better word, verbose. See for yourself:
.
I have a limited tool set for fixing this. I mentioned Akismet but that means $$ and sending ALL comments to Akismet for their perusal. I don’t need or want someone else lookin’ up our skirts, as it were.
.
FlatPress (the blogging software you’re lookin’ at) doesn’t do registered visitor accounts. So limiting comments to authorized visitors isn’t an option.
.
I’m left with two options: manually deal with spam or switch to different blogging software. For the past few days it’s been option the first, so far so good. I don’t want to go anywhere near option two.
.
Here’s what I’ve done. First, I set the blog to: 1) Queue all comments until I approve ‘em. 2) Email me when a new comment arrives.
.
Second thing I did was, I finally set up an email system here within my home network. All emails from every system are sent to an inbox on my workstation.
.
So as I sit here, about once an hour, a subdued ‘pop’ and a notification balloon in the corner of the screen lets me know a comment has arrived. If it’s valid I approve it and presto it’s on the blog. Every few days I stop by the blog and delete the spam.
.
I’ll try this for awhile and see how it goes. Cheers.

I should have fully read (red) this post before I commented on the previous one. I am surprised that bots can read the text and do the math.
It’s always something…
